Questions and Answers on Argan Oil
Where does Argan oil come from?
The Argan tree known as the tree of life, for a variety of benefits and healing properties is grown exclusively in the south west region of Morocco between Essaouira and Agadir, in a biosphere reserve. Argan trees can live up to 350 years and require no cultivation, therefore making their unique oil organic. Today approximately only 800,000 hectares is the home to the Argan trees that produce and distribute the oil world wide.
What is Argan oil?
Argan oil is derived from the fruit’s seed of the Argan tree. It is rich in gold color with a pleasant, warm, nutty fragrance, this oil is packed with necessary essentials the body relies on for functioning and preventing life threatening ailments and diseases. Argan oil is composed of a high concentration of essential non-saturated fatty acids, as well as linoleic acid, sterols, vitamin E, tocopherols, antioxidants, carotenoids, and an all natural immune booster, squalene.
Why is considered such a rare oil?
Argan oil is known as liquid gold for its rarity. The Argan tree is one of the oldest trees on earth, and due to its limited growing habitat it is near extinction. Because it is such a rare species, it has been put on the list of endangered trees by the UNESCO. The area has been declared a reserve to protect the trees from timber harvesting. Argan’s internal healing attributes are equally imperative as its external beauty properties; making it extremely high in demand. It can take up to 15 years for an Argan tree to produce nuts, and one single tree normally only harvests a few liters of oil, making it a very rare and special oil.
How is the oil produced?
The harvesting, extraction, and processing of Argan oil is an extensive process. Morocco recently began to support the local women of their country by giving them an opportunity to make money in cooperatives as the demand for Argan oil began to rise. Traditionally the oil is produced by hand. The soft pulp is stripped from the nuts which are then laid out in the sun to dry. Stones are used to crack open the dried nuts so the seeds can be removed. Next, they’re slowly roasted to give the oil a rich, nutty flavor. Water is added to the roasted seeds and they are ground into a thick paste which is squeezed by hand to extract the oil, which is later cold pressed. It can take over ten hours of labor to produce as little as one liter of oil.
What is the difference between the topical Argan and edible?
Cosmetic and culinary Argan oil are technically both edible. Culinary Argan nuts are first roasted prior to pressing which gives the oil a very pleasant nutty flavor. Culinary Argan oil is cold pressed to sustain all nutritive value, and filtered to ensure it is free of particles. Culinary Argan is a food grade oil that is subject to clear legal regulations for internal use, while cosmetic Argan oil regulations are not as clear. Moroccan Life Products Edible Argan oil used in our softgels is tested to ensure it is pure and free of any harmful chemicals, pesticides, or bacteria, thus making it completely safe to digest, as well as being manufactured in a Canadian GMP facility with high product quality control.
How long has it been on the market?
Argan oil dates back to thousands of years to the Berber Tribes who reaped its benefits in the modern day region of Arganeraie. The first written document on Argan dates back to the thirteenth century written by Ibn Al Baytar, a botanist and physicist. Argan came out in the cosmetic industry first in Europe, then spread to North America in the past recent years.
